My name is Liz Lin, and I’m an Asian American psychologist and a parent of two multiracial Asian kids in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It’s nice to meet you!
As a psychologist whose research and clinical work focused on Asian American adolescents, I know how important role models are for the process of racial identity development. To my detriment, I had very few Asian American role models – IRL or on TV – when I was growing up in the Midwest in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and I would love for my kids to have more resources than I did.
Thus, I started this project so my kids would be able to learn from the experiences of multiracial Asians like them – how they made sense of their multiracial Asian identity, how this identity has evolved, how this identity has been a challenge and an asset in their personal and professional lives. I’m sharing these interviews here, so others who are on the same journey will be able to access them too.
As a monoracial Asian American person, I’m not an expert in multiracial Asian experiences. The goal of this project is to spotlight multiracial Asian stories so my kids can learn from them and hopefully gain some validation and vocabulary for their own.
If you have suggestions for people I should interview (especially if you can make an introduction!), please email me! I’m always looking for more folks to talk with, especially multiracial Asians who are South Asian, Southeast Asian, Pacific Islander, Black, Latinx, Native American, LGBTQIA+, and/or adoptees.
